Dark Blue Fluorite on Quartz

Description

The Fluorite Series

Mineral(s): Fluorite on Quartz
Locality: Huanggang Mine, Chifeng Prefecture, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China

Octahedral indigo blue fluorite in complexly modified crystals on a pair of white quartz crystals. The fluorite actually changes color, depending on the type of light (light temperature rather) being shone upon it: in artificial light, it is an indigo blue, while in sunlight, it is teal blue (or some would say greenish blue). This property is known as metamerism - it is the same reason why there was a color difference for the infamous dress that that caused much debate about a year ago.

The crystals appear almost rounded and lumpy because the cubic/octahedral shape has been modified to wacky degrees. According to Norman King on mindat.org, the proper terminology for these shapes are "trisoctahedrons" (see here for more details on the crystallography).

The quartz itself is pretty interesting too. The two quartz crystals being covered by the fluorite is actually colorless, but is covered by a surface of opaque white quartz in tiny multiple terminations, almost scaly in appearance. Yet inside this quartz is a brown core of smoky quartz. This is not visible in the picture, but if you viewed the piece from the underside, you would easily see such a cross section.

I'm not a fan of the picture itself. This is a slightly older picture I took when I used to take a lot of shots with white backgrounds. Despite the argument that a white background can bring out a contrast in darker-colored minerals, the quality still looks somewhat less sharp (and a black background is often considered "classier" and more "professional"). The white certainly blanches out the edges of this specimen.

Finally, this is one of the few pieces I somewhat regret purchasing. As of now, you can find dark blue fluorite from Huanggang Mine ALL over eBay at very cheap prices, but I purchased this piece when these fluorites were a new discovery about 2-3 years ago. For a miniature-sized piece of this quality, $160 is just too much nowadays (and that's after I bargained to have the price lowered from $200!). I'm usually a bargain hunter, but this was an impulse purchase at a local mineral show. This particular mine pumps out so much fluorite with so many varieties that it's insane. There is so much quantity to be found that if you want a specimen, please do some research on prices before buying!

Thanks again for all the details in the description!

With regards to the pricing I'd recommend to just not care:
1. It's a nice and interesting specimen and you wanted to own it - would you really be more happy if you wouldn't have bought it? ;)
2. In the past I often bought specimen for prices I wasn't happy with when (shortly) later thinking about it. But locations mine out fast and then prices rocket up.
In the long term, as long as there's peace in the western sphere it's very likely you won't regret to have bought it.
